I loved this book on so many levels. It was a great story, beginning, middle, and end. Paula “nailed” the dialect. Right from the first, the reader is immersed in Penrose’s culture.

Paula produced a vivid reconstruction of racism in South Africa through the eyes of a naive and good-hearted boy who resolved never to hurt another person.

Excellent character development as we watched him grow and mature, never giving up his basic principles. It was an object-lesson in the balance of good and evil, persecution and compassion.

It was so real, so human that no matter your race or culture, the story was completely relatable.
